FPA worked to increase support for a host of health care bills and marked the passage of new pieces of legislation important to the reproductive health care community: the Anti-Shackling of Pregnant Prisoners bill; updated Prenatal Care Assistance Program (PCAP); the Family Health Care Decisions Act; and the Nursing Mother’s Bill of Rights.
Dr. George Tiller of Wichita, Kansas, one of only three physicians in the United States who provided late-term abortion care, was murdered in May of 2009. Dr. Tiller’s murder rocked the reproductive health care community, as well as the whole nation. FPA, in collaboration with Assemblymember Sam Hoyt (D-Grand Island) , mmediately took action to work with state officials and law enforcement agencies to impose greater punishment for such acts in New York State. FPA strongly entered the world of new media, placing emphasis on spreading the reproductive health care message through blogs and social networking sites.
