Sex Education

Research shows that comprehensive, medically accurate, sex education helps to delay the onset of intercourse, reduce the frequency of intercourse, increase condom and contraception use, and decrease the number of sexual partners of program participants.

Family Planning Advocates of New York State strives to make sex education available to every young person so that they may access information and develop skills necessary to make save and responsible choices.

In New York State…

  • 110 teenage girls will become pregnant today.
  • 1 in 4 teenage girls has asexually transmitted infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control
  • More than 6 in 10 high school students will have sex before they graduate.
  • Statistics show that 1 in 3 new HIV infections in the United States are among young people, and girls are particularly at risk.

The need and community support for providing this life-saving information to our young people remains high. Our community-based sex education programs are available in communities with the highest rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. These programs, however, are not reaching all students in need.

FPA’s goal is to make comprehensive, medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education available to youth in grades K-12 in schools throughout the state. The vast majority of New Yorkers agree. In fact, 88% of New Yorkers support sex education in our schools. Learn more about our efforts to fulfill our goal of making comprehensive sex education available to New York’s youth.
